Dr. Jentry Barrett – Campus Engagement Zone Coordinator
Dr. Barrett is part of the NECARES HUB leadership team. Her research and position as an Extension Engagement Zone Coordinator focuses on community-university relationships, adult learning, and linking the talent in NE Extension to meaningful change and support of our community partners.
1) Why are you so passionate about partnering and collaboration?
As Nebraska’s land-grant institution, we are committed to bringing the research and resources of UNL to all Nebraskans. I love the language in the N2025 aim around broadening engagement: “The co-creation, co-discovery, and co-development of solutions is key to the lang grant missions of the University of Nebraska. It is imperative that the university embrace a culture of engagement and partnership that generates genuine mutual benefit both in Nebraska and across the world.”
2) What excites you about the HUB? How do you see it changing the way our communities work alongside faculty?
The HUB allows us to gather community needs to shape the research happening at UNL. So often, faculty develop their research based on personal interest, gaps in the literature, or funding opportunities. Although these are important, the HUB will allow faculty to develop their research based on community needs.
3) Are there some untapped areas of expertise among our team or other UNL faculty, which you think communities might use better, or differently?
UNL faculty have expertise in several areas that communities would benefit from, including evaluation, implementation, and improvement science.
4) How does your identity as a Nebraskan impact your work and the meaning you find in partnering with other organizations?
Nebraskans are known to come together and braid resources to solve problems. I’m so lucky to be part of this team that allows me to help make UNL part of these collaborations.
